This fall, the Villanueva Library is launching a new program for young children from birth to age five. Titled "1000 Books before Kindergarten," the program is recognized across the country for its importance and success in developing early literacy skills through a widening exposure to books, storytelling, and spoken language at an early age. By engaging a range of learning styles - listening, looking, touching, moving - and focusing on informal learning through play, song, and hands on activities, the program builds language recognition while building social skills in a small group environment. Children participating in the program enter kindergarten more prepared both in terms of their language skills and more ready for the formal learning of a school setting.
To participate in the program, sign up and start reading aloud to your child! You can also join us Saturday mornings from 10-11 at the library for our small "1000 Books" reading group. The groups provide fun activities for children in a social setting and allow parents to select and check out books from our"1000 Books" program collection. Open to all pre-kindergarten children accompanied by an adult. To sign up, simply submit a registration form and start reading. You can track you books using this reading log.
