Literacy Programs and Services
Mission
The mission of the David F. Cargo Library is to provide resources for the teaching, learning and exploration that will enable community members of all ages to educate themselves and thrive. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of our rural community, to have the library as a commonplace for people of all ages, to improve their quality of life, by educating themselves, and have a place of interest to go to To read - To write - To learn - To educate - To explore - To teach. With todays pandemic times, the education of literacy today student aged children can be difficult to provide sufficient learning in literacy. The following programs are taken a stance from providing learning tools at home and students using alternate school schedules by learning partly at home and at school to prevent the spread of CoVid 19.
Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free books to children from birth to age five in participating communities within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Republic of Ireland. In 2020, the David F Cargo Public Library in Villanueva, NM alongwith the TLC – The Literacy Council of Northeastern New Mexico in Las Vegas NM has established the Imagination Library program for San Miguel County. As of July 1, 2020, we have reached up to 100 registrants in San Miguel County. The importance of exposing books to children at a young age contributes to success throughout the child’s life and ease in any aspect of their educational goals. Flyers have been posted in local merchants’ establishments and post offices advertising in the El Valle area. Teamwork continues with TLC to obtain more registrants in the El Valle area. We will continues promoting the program via social media and distribution of postings throughout the El Valle area.
Storyteller Day
Storyteller Day was the intent of obtaining residents of all ages in El Valle Area to tell stories at the library about family tradition, history, trades, family foods, and holiday traditions. Instead, it turned towards providing storytelling at the library on an annual basis in April. In April is National Library week, The David F Cargo Public Library in Villanueva, NM held its first annual Storyteller Day on April 18,2015, the second Storyteller Day was April 16, 2016 with a theme, “ Castles in the Air “ providing stories of fairies, knights, princesses, kings, and queens. The Princess and the Pea was read and Cinderella to name a few. Children got to make their own princess hats and interact reading and telling stories at the microphone. This was a great turn out.
The 3rd Storyteller day was themed, “Reading on the Orient” held on April 8, 2017. Maps of Asia and Japanese tales were told that day. The 4th Storyteller Day event held April 21, 2018 was themed, “Preserving Cultural Tradition in El Valle. “Where homemade Tortillas were assembled by all patrons and Jim Ballard had a hands on demonstration of spiritual music and children were able to play instruments. Katherine Beuhler taught traditional Baile Folklorico to all of the volunteers including the “Broom Dance.” The Broom Dance is performed mostly at weddings and it is played like musical chairs. There are many variations of the Broom Dance depending on which part of the latin world you are from. It was a successful event. The 5th Storyteller Day themed, “Beatrix Potters Tea Party.” The Storyteller event was taken to the local Valle Elementary and Middle School in El Pueblo within 10 miles of the David F Cargo Public Library in Villanueva, NM. We took enlarged books, and tote bags provided by ABQ the Magazine with freebooks provided by TLC. We had 5 volunteers dressing up in tea party hats while reading many books aloud. The highlight of the event is having children read in front of the whole class and participating in games. The 6th Storyteller Day was held in January 17, 2020 themed “ Be Kind.” It was unforeseen the CoVId Pandemic would arise and change our rural community and the continental United States. The Valley School wanted us to visit more the upcoming school year. Therefore, with the Covid Pandemic, We will be broadcasting Storytime on You Tube for the months we were planning on reading to the kids in the following months: September, October, November, February March, April, and May. Early Childhood Literacy & After School Care
David F Cargo, the former ex-governor of New Mexico believed in early childhood literacy and reading to kids at a young age will contribute to their success Iife. With an Early Childhood literacy program, the Resource Room has interactive DVDs for children to learn at different levels of reading. With lively DVD content to capture the child imagination, they are learning verbal skills, spelling, and basic math. The DVD collection is going to expand upon the fully opening of the Library to Early Childhood learning in the lab on Saturday Mornings. The Early Childhood Literacy hopes to expand to an After-School Care Program having volunteers with an educational background and able to assist with their homework on all topics.
Curbside Library Services & Computer Lab Services
As of June 1, 2020, the library has opened the doors, having books of different topics and carts of free books for patrons to drive up and pick books. New revised membership cards are being worked on and new membership cards will be sent out via mail to patrons who have registered for library card. Check out books are ongoing during Curbside library service hours which are Friday 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays 10 am to 1pm. Storytime is Saturdays at 11am. If you would like to volunteer at the library or have questions about the library, contact Rebecca Salazar, Library Director @ 575-421-0808 or [email protected]. Computer lab services can be utilized by making an appointment during curbside library service hours. The Library offers office services during library opening hours, notary, scanning, printing, and copying for a donation.
