Literacy for all
Literacy is widely recognized as a fundamental determinant of security, success, and overall quality of life. Without the ability to understand and use language, children are more likely to struggle in school, fall behind in classes, and fail to complete high school. Adults may find it difficult to perform the basic activities of daily living if reading road signs, following instructions, or determining the correct medicine dosage are overwhelming obstacles.
At the Villanueva David F. Cargo Library, we believe all learners deserve the opportunity to develop language skills, and that learners of all ages have the capacity to do so. To provide this opportunity to the community, we offer resources for exploring, studying, and practicing language in an environment that is unpressured and supportive. We support early childhood literacy through story hours, family reading time, and read-aloud activities, as well as through our Community Storytelling program in the schools that encourages young children to listen to stories and to begin to tell their own. We also offer the "1000 Books Before Kindergarten" program to help expose children from birth to age 5 to the books, stories, letters and language games that will give them a strong base in early literacy skills. Parents can also use online resources to help build listening and reading skills for young learners. BETWEEN THE LIONS This PBS website includes read-aloud activities, videos, and more to help build a range of early reading and literacy skills in children. FREE for K- grade 1 |
